wGoodluck Jonathan Launches For Best 100 First Class Students
President Goodluck Jonathan has inaugurated a committee to scout the nation’s tertiary institutions for the best 100 first-class students that will be given to further study abroad.
Inaugurating the Special Committee on Scholarship for Best Brains in Abuja, on Thursday, the president instructed the ten-man committee to completely eschew the quota system in the selection process and go for the best brains.
The committee is expected to select the best 100 first-class students in some specialized courses such as the sciences, engineering and economics from universities in the country and expose them to the best facilities in the world.
In a bid to encourage and enhance knowledge transfer, beneficiaries of the scholarship after their graduation, are expected to lecture for the first five years, in the nation’s institutions, after which they can go on to be on their own.
The President, who is a doctorate degree holder, condemned the dearth of academics in the nation’s tertiary institutions, where only 60 percent of lecturers are doctorate degree holders.
President Jonathan noted that such a situation must change if Nigeria is be transformed.
He charged the committee headed by the executive secretary of the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Julius Okojie, to shun quota system and work only on merit in the selection of the brains for the scholarship programme.
According to the President, for Nigeria to maintain its status as a leading African country, and for the transformation agenda of the government to succeed, the government must pay more attention to the development of human capacity.
To this end, he pledged a total commitment to changing the educational system, across all levels from primary to tertiary.

    1. This is one of the best initiative to come out of Nigeria in recent times.
    2. 100 First Class Students-Our best brains, thrown to top world universities?-ponder on the brain drain styles of the advanced nations.. Again, has the president waivered their NYSC service year? One other thing to note is that most of current PHD holders, now in overseas, who were govt scholarships, left the nation with O level, A level certificates. But, fast to forget the privileges they had to achieve their present educational status -then,bar our officials from citing their works?
    3. This is a very good idea from Mr President, but if not properly monitor, the opportunity will be converted to Nija usual practice of MAN know MAN. As for me I don’t trust any body in this country again.
    4. God will help us and I believe Something great will come out of this initiative!!! God bless Nigeria!
    5. This is a great development coming from Mr president, but other consideration should be giving to those on second class lower , their grade is intertwin with financial constrain that a determined student has to go through example myself in other to acquire university education. Mr president please sir provide employment!!!
    6. Good initiative, we wll have hope that it turns out good and fine. Thank you Mr. President

However, the loan portion is waived when the student returns to his/her home country after completing the course of study. Normally, the financial support will not not exceed a time span of four years for one definite study plan, or a combination of two programmes.
Travelling expenses for entry into Norway can be reimbursed (fixed price). Students can apply for one annual home visit if the educational programme lasts more than one year, as well as financial support for travelling expenses for field work during the course of study. When the student returns home within 3 months after finishing the course, the cost of travelling home is covered by the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund.

The KAAD scholarships are addressed to post-graduates and to academics who already gained professional experience and who are interested in postgraduate studies (or research stays) in Germany. This program is administered by regional partner committees, staffed by university professors and church representatives.

    Host Institution(s):
German Universities and Higher Education Institutions

    Fields of study:

There is no specific subject-preference. However, the selection board has often given preference to courses and subjects that they felt to be of significance for the home country of the applicant. This holds true especially for subjects of PhD-theses. There is therefore a certain leaning towards “development oriented” studies – this does however not mean that other fields (cultural, philosophic, linguistic, etc.) can not be of significance for a country and are ruled out.

    Number of Scholarships:
    Not specified

    Target group:
Citizens of developing or emerging countries in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America.
There is a preference for Catholic applicants. Among the scholars there is however also a limited number of: Protestant Christians, Orthodox Christians (especially from Ethiopia), Muslims.  Catholic Priests and Religious People are eligible only in very rare cases.  There are other scholarship programmes catering especially for them.
Editor’s Note: For Muslim students,  see the List of Scholarships for Muslims.

    Scholarship value/inclusions:

Covers the cost of studies. Inquire with the scholarship provider for more information.

    Eligibility:
For the scholarship programme 1 of KAAD you can apply if you:
    • come from a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East or Latin America
    • have a university degree and professional experience from your home country
    • want to acquire a master’s degree or a PhD at a German university or do a post-doctoral research project (2-6 months for established university lecturers) at a German university
    • are a Catholic Christian (or general belong to a Christian denomination). Candidates from other religions can apply if they are proposed by Catholic partners and can prove their commitment to interreligious dialogue.
The general rule is that applicants for Master-scholarships should be of the maximum age of 30, while applicants for PhD-scholarships should not be older than 35.

    Application instructions:

KAAD is working with focus- and partner countries in your region. There are so-called Partner Committees in these countries and applications are channelled via them. Visit the web page relevant to you: Africa (sub-Sahara), Asia, Latin America, Near and Middle East (including northern Africa).
Applications for the September selection need to be complete by end of June. Applications to be tabled in the March-session of the selection board need to be complete by end of November the previous year.
Applicants needs to show either an admission letter or a confirmation by the university that they are eligible for the course and that the application has been received and being processed.
